Acting Lessons at Laity Arts

Laity Institute of the Arts provides structured theatre courses designed to engage and enlighten each student, regardless of age, on what their potential is and can be. We teach the following:

Beginning Actor's Workshop

Building on skills in Creative Dramatics, students will use theatre games, pantomime, improvisation and scripted work to refine their acting skills. Appropriate for both beginning and returning students.

Intermediate Actor's Workshop

Designed for students with previous acting experience. In addition to incorporating more advanced script analysis and scene study, attention is paid to creative self expression through individual character development and lecture.

Benefits of Laity's drama instruction:

  • Improvisation Skills - Our program provides an opportunity for students to hone their Improvisation skills. Improvisation is the spontaneous response to new and unexpected situations. Life is improvisation. We respond in new ways when spontaneous and unexpected things occur to us.
  • Play making - In Drama you will be expected to create plays.  Play making is the process of experimenting with new roles. Through plays students can re-examine old roles and challenge society’s values and interpretations.
  • Drama As A Co-operative Process - Students will be asked to participate in group work. This will help them to explore relationships on and off stage. It will help their communication skills and it will help them to make friends.
  • Personal Benefits - Drama helps with building self-confidence, speaking in public, and developing interpersonal skills. Our program will help your student to be more aware of how their physical presentation can effect the way people see them. Ethically, it provides the motivation to start to evaluate their own values and beliefs.
  • Drama Influences our Lives - By studying drama’s impact on their culture they can begin to look more critically at what the media is offering them and they can choose whether or not to accept the messages that it gives. At Laity we want our students to study Drama to become intelligent spectators who can distinguish between good and bad drama as well as ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ ideologies.

Acting Program

Laity's Drama Program is designed to give as much exploratory freedom to the participants as possible in a structured environment. Because the essence of theatre lies in the simultaneous presence of live actors and spectators, it is important to develop both discipline for the craft as well as spontaneity. Understandably, this represents a wide adaptation of several disciplines in the acting field alone. It is the decision of the faculty to focus on areas that are basic and elemental to the process which allows a beginner, intermediate or advanced student to find something of value in the program.

Advanced programs in audition technique, script analysis, character development and how to approach a role are taught after the fundamentals are laid down. Classes are divided according to skill and experience as well as age. Research has shown students involved in the visual and performing arts do better in STAR testing, SAT/ACT and standardized testing over all. This happens because the arts have the ability to provide students with the skills, confidence and motivation necessary in developing increased cognitive reasoning skills and reading comprehension levels.
