Background
Founded in 1989, the Laity Theatre Company began with the dreams of Jim and Delayna Goins. The husband and wife team made a conscious choice to utilize their expertise to serve the inner-city youth in the Los Angeles area through the development of a comprehensive summer theatre workshop. Always popular and fun-filled, the program eventually grew to also include adults, and became known as a company of professionals who served the community through artistic and educational means.
Laity's approach to the arts is based on the belief that a strong foundation in the arts begins with early education. The ultimate appreciation and thriving existence of the arts depends on individuals who have been taught, early-on the value and richness the arts possess. Students having experienced and benefited by the arts in their own lives, will guarantee their thriving existence long into the future without question of purpose or merit.
Laity has chosen to execute this plan through the Laity Institute of the Arts which is dedicated to teaching the four pillars plus science: dance, music, theatre, visual arts and engineering camps on an educational level and second by providing a professional theatre company where these disciplines can be married together and showcased through local and regional productions.
Why Support the Arts
Arts programs are typically the first programs cut in tightening budgets and have suffered from many years of declining school budgets. Yet arts programs are required by the state to be an integral part of the curriculum, a recognition of their benefit to cognitive learning skills.
Laity supports arts and engeering science education for all students as a vital and fundamental part of the core curriculum.
The arts and engineering sciences foster students' abilities to develop problem solving skills, flexibility, creativity, cooperative approaches, persistence, and responsibility as well as oral and written language skills.
Programs range from activities which simply provide exposure to a large body of students to those which provide more in-depth training.
Laity is focused on programs for the arts which are not currently funded through other sources, such as:
