Former Principal of Joshua Hills, Arland Atwood sat down with us in 2007-2008 to discuss the importance of the arts in schools. An avid supporter of quality programming that would benefit the educational development of children in school, Arland was a light-bearer for LEAP at Joshua Hills. Arland passed away suddenly in March 2010 from natural causes. He will be missed, but his words will live on.

In an effort to help increase the overall awareness in the visual and performing arts in schools, and the tremendous role they play, Laity has developed “LEAP”, an after-school program designed to help augment and support the teaching of the arts during the traditional school day with a comprehensive content-based after-school arts program.
Mission
Laity’s mission is to stimulate the intellectual and artistic minds of students in grades K-8 in dance, music, drama and art through LEAP. In order to achieve this mission, certain components have been put in place along with the appropriate subject matter, rigor, meaningful content, goals of completion and measurable objectives. Ongoing assessments are also implemented to accurately measure skills learned

Standards
Laity has chosen to use the National Standards in Dance, Music, Drama and Art in addition to the California State Standards for Arts Education as a guide in order to maximize student’s experience.
