Acting Program

Laity's Drama Program is designed to give as much exploratory freedom to the participants as possible in a structured environment. Because the essence of theatre lies in the simultaneous presence of live actors and spectators, it is important to develop both discipline for the craft as well as spontaneity. Understandably, this represents a wide adaptation of several disciplines in the acting field alone. It is the decision of the faculty to focus on areas that are basic and elemental to the process which allows a beginner, intermediate or advanced student to find something of value in the program.

Advanced programs in audition technique, script analysis, character development and how to approach a role are taught after the fundamentals are laid down. Classes are divided according to skill and experience as well as age. Research has shown students involved in the visual and performing arts do better in STAR testing, SAT/ACT and standardized testing over all. This happens because the arts have the ability to provide students with the skills, confidence and motivation necessary in developing increased cognitive reasoning skills and reading comprehension levels.

Music Program

Laity believes that music classes are a vital part of student academic achievement. The importance of music and fine arts has been debated in school board rooms across the country for several years. As budgets are trimmed and school music programs are cut, this becomes an important question to answer. These music and arts programs are an important component of student learning and success.

Research has shown students involved in the visual and performing arts do better in STAR testing, SAT/ACT and standardized testing over all. Visual Arts Program

Laity Instructors strive for excellence in teaching and communicating the essentials of visual arts to each and every student.
Students learn to accept that other's preferences may differ from their own but begin to appreciate multiple artistic solutions and interpretations. Questions asked in response to artwork become more refined and probing. Study of historical and cultural context gives students insight into the role of visual arts as a record of human achievement. As they consider artworks in historical perspective, students begin to gain a clearer understanding of what they themselves value.

With exposure comes several levels of thought which emphasizes exploration and discovery of visual arts. Students begin to form a foundation of learning about visual arts and continue to increase appreciation of visual arts. At the next level students continue to develop and explore through creative experiences. Their foundation of understanding and appreciation become stronger and continues to build. With further training, the emphasis becomes more introspective as students move to develop their own level of competence and personal style. In visual arts, the goals for these levels are related and parallel. The goals, content, instruction, students outcomes and evaluation methods naturally increase in sophistication and complexity when learning new styles.
